PROJECT SUMMARY
The objective of this team project was to redesign the public library in order to increase its value in modern society. Over the course of five weeks, we conducted ethnographic research, created user personas, organized our concepts on a mind map (created by Natalie R. Levy and Susan Juvet), and pitched three recommendations for placemaking in the modern library. Our recommendations were: 1) Equip each library with makerspace so that people can rent tools and access expert knowledge. 2) Increase the aesthetic appeal of libraries by including an atrium space to bring the outdoors in and encourage people to linger in the library. 3) Enhance the library experience for children by creating more opportunities for sensory, tactile, and movement exploration through play space designed just for kids. My favorite part of the design process for this project was observing and interviewing a group of chess players at the Enoch Pratt Free Library Main Branch. The group had its own well-defined subculture, including a detailed system of unspoken norms and rules and player hierarchy. The players were very open to telling me about their stories and chess strategies and I enjoyed the opportunity to learn from them. As this was a large team, the group process required a large degree of compromise and management. |
