PROJECT SUMMARY
Today was Day 2 of Creative Market's 30 Day Challenge to become a better designer. Today's Challenge: Turn your handwriting into a font. I learned a lot from watching Jennifer Coyle's video tutorial How to Vectorize Your Own Hand Drawn Font. Below is the process I took and the final PNG file. |
After watching Jennifer's video once through, I experimented with the technique of scanning handwritten letters into Photoshop and adjusting the image through levels and the eraser until it was clean. Then, I wrote out my whole signature to play around with.
I realized that a black sharpie was a must, and it didn't really matter because the color could be altered later. When I scanned in my signature I really liked the way my last name came through, when the sharpie was starting to dry up, in contrast to the smooth, thick lines in the first name. After some playing I decided to keep just the S.
I needed a K to match so I went through pages and pages in my notebook with cursive K's until I found one I liked that was properly scratchy looking. This is not the K I used but it is a fun snapshot of one of my notebooks.

Here it is!
I like the way the imperfections really convey that it's hand drawn but it's still smooth.
I considered throwing this into my email signature line but I don't want to be "that guy" whose one line emails taken up a ton of space.
